My research interest is the mechanisms of intestinal physiology and pathophysiology with a focus on intercellular signaling that results in physiological function of unique cell types. The body exists in a state of receiving constant environmental stimulus and specific cell types need to be able to respond in a coordinated way, despite--or perhaps because of--their specialized functions. To that end, I am currently investigating the influence of the intestinal mesenchyme on the development of the intestinal epithelium using the iPSC-derived HIOs as a model.

Fun Fact: 1) I own a small business selling artisan soap that I make in my free time. 2) I love playing video games whenever I can. 3) Unlike most members of the Spence lab, I unfortunately don't have a pet. Instead I must content myself with cooing over the pictures everyone else shares.
